Three Steps to Apply for Financial Aid

STEP 1. Apply for FSA ID

The FSA ID serves as your identifier to let you access your personal information in various U.S. Department of Education systems. It’s like the personal identification number you receive from your bank that enables you to access your account. Because your FSA ID serves as your electronic signature, you should not give it to anyone.

You need a FSA ID in order to perform any of the following tasks:

      • Electronically sign the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on the web, sign renewal FAFSAS on the web, or make FAFSA corrections on the web.
      • View the status of a submitted FAFSA application on FAFSA on the web’s Status Check.
      • View the results of a processed FAFSA application on FAFSA on the web’s Student Access.
      • Access your Federal Student Aid information on thee National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) website.
      • Make updates to the email or mailing address where your FSA ID can be sent.
      • Complete any required student loan counseling or sign the Master Promissory Note (MPN).
      • Print a copy of your Student Aid Report (SAR).
      • If you are a dependent student, one of your parents will also need an FSA ID to electronically sign your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on the web.

      Get Your FSA ID Now!

Watch the video to find out how to apply for Financial Aid starting with Step 1 – Apply for an FSA ID.

      STEP 2. Gather Needed Documents

You and your parents, if applicable, should have the following records available to help you answer questions on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA):

      • Your Social Security card
      • Your Driver’s License
      • Your Permanent Resident Receipt Card (if applicable)
      • Your W-2 forms and other records of money earned
      • Your income tax return
      • Records of veterans’ benefits
      • Records of child support paid
      • Records of taxable earnings from Federal Work-Study or other need-based work programs
      • Records of student grants, scholarships, and fellowship aid, including AmeriCorps awards that were included in your (or your parents) AGI
      • Current stocks, bonds, and other investment records
      • Current business and farm records
      • Current bank statements

Dependent students should have all of the records listed above from their parents, except for their driver’s licenses.

You may still submit your FAFSA if you do not have all of the information required, but your FAFSA must be complete prior to you being awarded any financial aid package. Additionally, you may be required to provide the Financial Aid Office a copy of such documents. Visit the Financial Aid portal for more information.

STEP 3. Fill Out the FAFSA

If you have completed steps one (1) and two (2), you have applied for an FSA ID and have gathered a number of documents that will help you complete the FAFSA. Remember, completing the and submitting a FAFSA is FREE!! In fact, charging applicants a fee for completing and/or submitting the FAFSA is prohibited by law.
      • Click on the link to complete the online FAFSA
      • A video tutorial to assist you in filling out the FAFSA is available at http://www.finaid.ucsb.edu/fafsasimplification/
